Description

Ammonites are extinct cephalopod which evolved from prehistoric nautiloids. These sea creatures lived between 400 million - 200 million B.C.E. Ammonites had hard, chambered shells and soft tentacles. They are distantly related to sea creatures such as octopi, squid, and cuttlefish.

This Madagascan ammonite is from the Jurassic Period (approx. 200 million years old). Over time, calcite deposits have filled the shell's chambers, creating a beautiful specimen. I drilled this fossil by hand and chose areas which would allow the natural patterns of the shell be seen.

Ammonites are one of my favorite fossils and beautiful in jewelry. 100% sterling silver was used to create the main bracelet and gemstone "tentacles." The gemstone tentacles are made from polished young amber and golden citrine gemstones. When worn the tentacles dangle freely from the main bracelet. This bracelet is finished with a solid sterling silver lobster clasp.

Amber is fossilized tree resin. This particular young amber has a very deep, rich, and warm color. It reminds me of a dark ale with the sun shining through. The earthy tones of the amber mimic some of the lighter hues of the ammonite.

The beautiful golden stones are citrine, a yellow quartz. The name comes from the French word for lemon. These stones have a beautiful, creamy look that accentuate the shell's patterns.
